TAMPA – The No. 29 Tulane men's tennis team (13-4) competed in its first American Athletic Conference match-up on Thursday on the road in Tampa, and it was the host school, No. 26 South Florida (12-6) who emerged victorious with the 5-2 win. Seniors Sebastian Rey and Chi-Shan Jao were responsible for the Green Wave's two points, each picking up a singles victory this afternoon.
"Congratulations to USF on a hard fought win," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We did pretty good in a bunch of places today, but unfortunately, pretty good is not going to cut it. We didn't close the door at a couple of spots where we were either in control or gained back control and put ourselves in a place to be successful. The guys will need to play to win, as opposed to play not to lose, if we're planning on having success against an equally strong Memphis program on Sunday."
In doubles, Jao and Constantin Schmitz were on the verge of winning their sixth straight, up 5-4 over the ranked pair of Sasha Gozun and Alberto Barroso; however, the Bulls clinched the doubles point before the match could finish, as USF won 6-4 on both courts two and three.
Later down 2-0 in singles, Rey got the Wave on the board with a 6-4, 6-3, victory on court three over Barroso, improving to 8-4 in the process. Next, USF struck a blow when No. 62 Gozun handed No. 18 Schmitz just his second loss this spring, defeating the junior, 6-2, 7-6(4).
Jao then kept his singles momentum rolling with his team best eighth straight win, besting Pierre Luquet, 6-2, 6-4. Yet, South Florida pushed ahead for the final 5-2 victory with wins on court five and court two, as the latter marked Ewan Moore's first singles loss in the past 11 matches.
Up next, the Wave look to bounce back and get their first conference win when they head to Memphis on Sunday, April 2, at Noon CT.
