NEW ORLEANS – It only took two hours and 12 minutes for the No. 27 Tulane men's tennis team (17-4) to cap an 11-0 undefeated season at home on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over No. 36 SMU (11-10). The victory also marked the Green Wave's 17th win this spring, which marks a new program best in the post-Katrina era.
"Love the effort by these guys today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "They were focused and dialed in, from the first point in doubles, all the way through the last point in singles. We had almost a complete effort there with all straight-set wins. That's really saying something about their heart and ability, taking down a SMU squad that has some great wins this year."
Ewan Moore and Tyler Schick got the doubles round going in Tulane's favor with a 6-2 win on court two. Next, Constantin Schmitz and Chi-Shan Jao clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory on court one.
Schick continued to roll in singles where he quickly wrapped his match, 6-1, 6-3, on court four, thus improving to 13-3 this spring. Jao then made the most of his Senior Day experience with his 12th straight win, now 13-1 on the year, with a 6-4, 6-1, win on court six.
Tied at 3-3 in both the first and second sets, Luis Erlenbusch went on to claim the match, 6-3, 6-3. Sebastian Rey also got in on the Senior Day fun with a 6-2, 7-5, victory over No. 70 Ronald Slobodchikov, marking his third ranked win from this past year.
Lastly, No. 16 Schmitz conquered his 11th ranked opponent this spring with a 6-4, 6-4, win over No. 93 Hunter Johnson on court one. Schmitz is now a team best 15-3 this spring.
"We wanted to finish strong heading into conference tournament," Booras added. "This last homestand we set some goals about how we are going to keep climbing as a team and this is one of the ways."
Up next, the Green Wave will await its seeding for the American Athletic Conference Championships, which takes place in Orlando, Florida, starting on Thursday, April 20.
