LAKE NONA, FLA. – The red-hot No. 27 Tulane men's tennis team (17-4) will take their four-match win streak into the American Athletic Conference Championships at the USTA National Campus, starting Friday, April 21. The No. 2 seeded Green Wave will challenge No. 7 seeded Temple in the quarterfinals at 11 a.m. CT.
In fact, all three of Tulane's potential conference tournament matches will take place at 11 a.m. CT and feature both live scoring and a live stream for fans to follow along. In addition, the championship match will be streamed live by the American Digital Network.
WATCHING THE WAVE
The Green Wave recorded a 17-4 regular season, already marking the most wins in the post-Katrina era. The Olive and Blue went undefeated at home at 11-0 and posted a 3-1 mark against conference foes, defeating the likes of Memphis, Tulsa and SMU, but falling to South Florida. The Wave reached as high as No. 20 in the national rankings and currently sit at No. 27.
Tulane is led by junior Constantin Schmitz, whose 15-3 dual record has led to a No. 17 national ranking. Senior Chi-Shan Jao enters the weekend with a 12-match win streak and 13-1 record. Freshman Ewan Moore boasts the second most wins at 14-5 and is closely followed by Tyler Schick (13-3) and Sebastian Rey (12-4). Luis Erlenbusch rounds out the lineup at 11-6.
CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
At last year's American Athletic Conference Championships, Tulane knocked off host Memphis but fell 4-2 to USF in the semifinals. At the Wave's first American Championships in 2015, Tulane swept UCF, but Tulsa halted them, 4-3, in the semis. Thus, Tulane will be seeking its first appearance in the championship match.
Back in Conference-USA, the Green Wave claimed the conference tournament title five times: 1997, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
DOUBLE-TAKE
The Olive and Blue are 10-10 in doubles this season. When Tulane has claimed the early 1-0 advantage, they are 10-0.
Jao is ranked 83rd in doubles with Schmitz and is also ranked 88th alongside Rey.
BRACKETOLOGY
Temple enters the weekend with a 17-9 record with a 7-9 combined mark when they are away or on neutral courts. The Owls went 1-3 against American opposition, losing to East Carolina, Tulsa and Memphis, but swept UConn.
Now, if the seedings hold out, Tulane would face No. 3 seeded UCF in the semis. The two last met in February of 2016 when the Wave won 6-1 in New Orleans. This year, the Knights are 14-5 and ranked No. 31 in the country. Lastly, South Florida holds the top seed with a No. 24 national ranking and 13-8 record. The Bulls bested the Wave, 5-2, back on March 30 in Tampa.
