LAKE NONA, Fla. – The Tulane men's tennis team's quest for their first appearance in the championship match at the American Athletic Conference Championships was once again halted in the semifinal round as the third-seeded UCF Knights (16-5) earned a 4-0 sweep over the second-seeded Green Wave (18-5). The Wave once again competed without the services of its top-ranked singles player in No. 17 Constantin Schmitz.
"Congrats to UCF who really came out and played a great match," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We knew what to expect and the level they were going to bring, but our guys just weren't good enough. They took it to us in a lot of different places."
The Knights jumped on the Wave in doubles, recording a 6-2 win on court two and a 6-1 victory on court three. The No. 88 ranked pairing of Chi-Shan Jao and Sebastian Rey were locked in a tight 3-4 battle on court one when the match was stopped.
Tulane's trio of freshmen in Ewan Moore, Luis Erlenbusch and Tim Ruetzel were looking to repeat their quarterfinal round performance in which all three recorded singles victories and were certainly positioned well to do so when the match was ultimately clinched by UCF.
Down 6-4 in a first-set tiebreak, Moore rallied to take it 10-8. Meanwhile, Erlenbusch won his first set 7-5, and Ruetzel was on the verge of victory, up 6-4, 6-5.
The hometown Knights eventually punched their ticket to the conference tournament final with straight-set wins on courts one, three and five.
Up next, the Olive and Blue will wait to see what NCAA Regional they will be competing in when the NCAA selection show airs on May 2 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
