WATCHING THE WAVE
The Green Wave head into NCAA Tournament play after achieving its most successful season in the post-Katrina era, capturing highs in wins (18-5) and in a national ranking (No. 20). Other season highlights include a perfect 11-0 record at home and four wins against top-40 nationally ranked teams.
The Wave flexed its muscle in the end of the year conference awards, claiming both the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Year in Constantin Schmitz and Freshman of the Year in Ewan Moore. Both Schmitz and Moore co-led the squad with 15 dual wins. Schmitz picked up seven ranked wins this spring, climbing to his current singles ranking of No. 18.
However, Schmitz is not the only Tulane player ranked in singles, as senior Sebastian Rey checked in at No. 117 with his 12-5 dual record. Furthermore, the rest of Tulane's singles lineup all boast double-digit dual victories in Luis Erlenbusch (12-6), Chi-Shan Jao (13-2) and Tyler Schick (13-4).
In doubles, the Olive and Blue are 11-11 this season. When Tulane has claimed the early 1-0 advantage, they are a perfect 11-0. Furthermore, Tulane's No. 1 doubles pair of Rey and Jao are 6-3 together and ranked No. 70 in the country.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
For the second straight year, Tulane is participating in the 'Big Dance.' It marks their 11th overall appearance where they are a combined 7-10. The Olive and Blue's best outing since the tournament field expanded to a 64-team bracket came in 2003, when they emerged from the regional to make the round of 16.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
No. 49 Washington enters the weekend with a 12-11 record and on a five-match losing streak, dropping Pac-12 contests to Stanford, California, Oregon and Utah twice. Mitch Stewart leads the Huskies ranked No. 100 in singles but possesses a dual record of 7-9. Jake Douglas (13-5) and Amit Batta (12-4) lead Washington in singles wins, primarily playing on courts three and five, respectively.
Presbyterian College booked its ticket to the NCAA Tournament by going 18-10 and winning the Big South Championship Tournament, defeating Liberty, Winthrop and Campbell along the way. Friday will mark Presbyterian's first NCAA Championship appearance in any sport since moving to Division-I in the 2007-08 school year. A lot of Presbyterian's success has come via doubles, where they have captured the 1-0 advantage in 20-of-28 matches.
No. 10 seed Texas hosts the regional after going 19-8 overall with a 13-2 mark at home. It marks the Longhorns 26th consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships and 35th selection overall. Texas' best win of the season came at home via a 4-3 upset over then No. 2 Ohio State. Texas will utilize three ranked singles players in No. 25 Christian Sigsgaard, No. 36 Harrison Scott and No. 55 Yuya Ito. In doubles, the Longhorns are represented by No. 76 Leonardo Telles and George Goldhoff.
