AUSTIN, Texas – Tulane saw another pole vault record fall, while four sprinters ran the sixth-fastest 4x100m relay time in school history as the Green Wave wrapped up their weekend at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin. At Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas, competitors wearing the Olive and Blue notched a handful of top-five finishes and personal bests on Saturday afternoon in preparation for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships next month.
ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Running their first 4x100m relay of the 2017 outdoor season, Tulane's team of Raymond Kibet, Larry Bryant, Devin Glenn and Corey Dauphine posted the sixth-fastest time in school history, finishing in a quick 41.09 for sixth place in the event. Kibet, the school record holder in the 400m dash, was joined by a trio of Green Wave football players for the fifth-best time in the American this season.
"It's so much fun to have a competitive relay team on our roster," director of track & field Eric Peterson said. "Not only did they successfully get the stick around the track, but they ran a time that is sixth all-time in school history and will be competitive in our conference. It's great to have football players competing on our team, as that goes to show how valuable those guys can be to our program. It's a significant achievement, and they all had a lot of fun."
Despite only having practiced together on a handful of occasions, the team posted a competitive mark that will help boost Tulane's scoring opportunities at the upcoming conference meet.
ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE
Tulane saw top performances in the pole vault for the second straight weekend, as redshirt senior Alyssa Applebee broke her own school record on a jump of 4.27m for a new lifetime best. She has now cleared four meters or higher in every meet this season and broke the fourteen-foot barrier for the first time in her collegiate career this afternoon.
Senior Mary Carson Pitts also posted a career high, clearing 4.17m for an improvement over last weekend's personal-best mark of 4.13m at the LSU Alumni Gold.
"Applebee's mark is big, not only because it's a school record and a new personal best, but she also broke the fourteen-foot barrier, and that's a big deal," Peterson said. "Pitts also had a personal best and is vaulting very well right now. Those two are really coming along at the right time, and they've set themselves up for some really strong performances in the next few weeks."
Back on the track, sophomore Jessica Duckett came away with a wind-aided third-place finish in the 100m hurdles, clocking 13.18 behind a pair of Minnesota runners. Freshman Brandi Hughes would finish a few spots behind Duckett in ninth, running a quick 13.67 race with a 3.1 wind.
"Even though their results will not count as official records, what is significant about the way they ran today is that they felt the right pace and rhythm," Peterson said. "That's the kind of thing you can't simulate in practice, and hopefully that will help them once we get into really high-level competition moving forward."
In the team standings, the Tulane women scored 42 points for a sixth-place finish at the meet behind Texas (141), Minnesota (134), TCU (97), UTSA (75) and Stanford (51). The Green Wave men finished in eighth, scoring 18 points on the weekend.
