NEW ORLEANS – The No. 28 Tulane men's tennis team (16-4) overcame a 1-0 deficit and pushed ahead in singles to garner a 4-1 victory over No. 37 Rice (19-6). No. 22 Constantin Schmitz led the charge while Ewan Moore followed suit, as each picked up their team leading 14th dual win this spring. Then, seniors Chi-Shan Jao and Sebastian Rey closed the door on Rice, as the latter clinched win No. 16 for the Wave.
"A lot of emotion out there. This is always a big match for us and we always have a battle with them every year," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "The guys really responded well after doubles. I like how they carried themselves and felt comfortable where they were at."
With Tulane winning on court one and Rice on court two, the doubles point came down to a tiebreak on court three where Moore and Tim Ruetzel battled Daniel Warren and Henrik Munch. Next, the Rice pairing surged ahead to take it 7-3 to deliver the Owls their lone point of the afternoon.
In singles, both No. 22 Schmitz and Moore made quick work of their opponents with straight-set wins. Schmitz defeated Tommy Bennett, 6-1, 6-2, on court one, while Moore bested David Warren on court three, 6-3, 6-3.
Over on court six, Jao wrapped next with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Munch, picking up his 11th straight win to improve to 12-1 this spring. On court two, Rey trailed 3-0 in the first set before rattling off six straight games to take it, 6-3. Later tied 4-4 in the second set, Rey pushed ahead to clinch via 6-4.
"The last couple of matches our seniors have really stepped it up," Booras added. "This means a lot to them. This is their team. They are such good leaders on and off the court, and they've done a great job this year."
Up next, the Green Wave will compete one last time during the regular season when they host No. 36 SMU on Wednesday, April 12, at 3 p.m. CT. Wednesday also marks senior day for both Jao and Rey, who will be honored before the match.
