Qualifies for World Championships in London
NEW ORLEANS – The 2017 track & field season may be in the books but for rising sophomore Raymond Kibet, his biggest victory came over the weekend after claiming his first national title in his home country of Kenya. Kibet becomes the first Tulane track & field athlete to qualify for the World Championships while still in school.
Running in his signature event, the 400m, Kibet punched his ticket at the Kenya National Track & Field Championships with a first place finish and time of 45.60.
"Winning this title has been one of Raymond's year-long goals," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson said. "It is a great accomplishment and I'm proud of the way he bounced back in a positive way from his NCAA performance. He is a champion now and looking forward to even better results in the future."
During the 2017 season, Kibet posted a career best 45.21 at NCAA Regionals. The time not only ranked Kibet 10th nationally in the event, but also broke the school record for the 400m by a full second. Kibet was also one of five Green Wave who qualified for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, this past month.
Kibet will now prep to take to the global stage later this summer, when he'll travel to London for the World Championships, starting August 5.
