Volleyball to Host Olive & Blue Scrimmage
Aug 11, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS -- With the start of the 2017 season around the corner, the Tulane volleyball program will tune up in the second annual Olive & Blue scrimmage, 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Hertz Center.
"We're going step-by-step to learn and implement our system," head coach Jim Barnes said. "With six freshmen, we're doing a lot of learning right now, but by the scrimmage, we'll be ready to compete and get after it."
The event is free and open to the public, with doors opening one hour before the action begins. Season ticket holders are invited to attend a 'Season Ticket Holder Thank You' event prior to the scrimmage, where they can meet with Barnes and enjoy light snacks and refreshments. Following the scrimmage, the team is available in the lobby to sign autographs for all fans in attendance.
The Olive & Blue scrimmage will provide the first glimpse of Barnes' young team in action. This year's squad features eight returning players, including senior setter Justine Bowers and sophomore libero Kaylie McHugh, who received First Team All-Louisiana honors and Second Team All-American Athletic Conference honors, respectively, last season. The Green Wave also welcomes six freshmen newcomers to the team.
"I know the team is looking forward to competing, putting on the uniform, and walking through gameday procedures," Barnes said. "It's the first time the freshmen are putting on a Tulane uniform, and they're excited to represent the school and play well. Several of these freshmen are going to have opportunities to play this season, so this scrimmage is critical for them to get out there and get past the butterflies because we're going to need them to perform this year."
Tulane continues its preseason workouts and practices after the scrimmage until August 25, when the team departs for San Antonio, Texas to compete in the I-10 Challenge. The first match of the season begins at 10 a.m., when the Green Wave plays UTEP, followed by a 5 p.m. match against Incarnate Word.
Season ticket packages for the 2017 season are on sale now. Tickets may be purchased by logging onto TulaneGreenWave.com or by calling the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at (504) 861-WAVE (9283). Fans can also visit the ticket office on the bottom level of the James W. Wilson Jr. Center Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
