NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball begins its in-conference schedule of play this weekend, taking on SMU, 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22, before traveling to Tulsa for a 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 24, match-up. The Green Wave enters the weekend atop the conference standings with a record of 11-2 overall, 0-0 American.
"We're excited about starting conference play and the challenge of going on the road against the team what won it last year," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We're embracing that, as a team, we can go on the road and make a statement right away. We're working hard in practice, and we'll be ready on Friday."
Last Time Out
Tulane enters the first weekend of American Athletic conference play on a roll after it defeated Northwestern State, Alabama State and North Florida to win the Tulane Invitational last weekend, extending its winning streak to six games and earning its second consecutive tournament title in the process. Freshman right side hitter Kristen Thompson was named the MVP of the tournament, as she averaged 3.22 kills per set. Thompson recorded 14 kills in the win against NSU and added 11 kills (.429 attack percentage) in the Green Wave's 3-0 win against ASU.
Series History
Last season, the Green Wave went 0-2 against SMU, dropping a heartbreaking five-set match, 3-2, Sept. 30, 2016, at its home court in the Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse and then losing 3-2 again at SMU on Oct. 30 in Dallas, Texas. Tulane earned a hard-fought 3-2 win in its first match-up against Tulsa, Oct. 2, at Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse, before losing 3-1 in its second match-up, Oct. 28 in Tulsa, Okla.
Tulane currently leads the SMU series 13-11, with a 6-5 record at home, while Tulsa and the Green Wave are tied 14-14 in the all-time series with Tulane owning a 7-4 record at home.
