NEW ORLEANS - Tulane senior Constantin Schmitz has been named the first American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the 2018 spring season, according to an announcement by the league office.
The weekly nod is the seventh of Schmitz's career, as he received the honor five times last season and once as a freshman in 2015, in addition to the being named the league's player of the month in October of 2016.
Ranked 21st nationally, Schmitz cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 singles victory over No. 78 Christian Langmo and clinched the match in the Green Wave's 6-1 season-opening victory over Miami (Fla.) on Friday. He also earned a 6-2 win against the Hurricanes at the No. 1 spot in the doubles lineup with teammate Ewan Moore.
The 2017 ITA All-American and American Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year now has seven victories over top-100 players dating back to the fall season.
Standing No. 22 in the ITA's team rankings, Tulane returns to the courts for ITA Kickoff Weekend, which begins Sunday, January 28 in Berkley, Calif. The Green Wave will take on 19th-ranked California with the winner advancing to face the victor of Oregon and 13th-ranked Stanford the following day.
