NEW YORK -- Junior Rebekah Markel continued her steak in the pole vault event Friday at the Dr. Sander Invitational inside the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, setting a new personal record for the fourth straight meet while also posting the third-best mark in program history.
Markel's vault of 4.15m earned her a second-place finish and bested her previous top mark of 4.07m, which she set last weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. Before that, the junior posted a mark of 4.05m (13-03.50) at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, which had topped her previous personal best of 4.00m (13-01.50), which she set earlier this season at the BSC Panther Icebreaker in Birmingham, Ala.
With the mark of 4.15m, Markel now owns the third-best pole vault measurement in Tulane's history. Markel sits behinds only Merritt Van Meter and Alyssa Applebee, who own marks of 4.27m and 4.22m, respectively.
"She was great today as she went through the competition.," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson said. "She was challenged by the winner, who was from the University of Wisconsin, but she cleared 4.15m, which is not only a new personal record, but she's getting really close to achieving a national championship-qualifying mark. I couldn't be more proud of her progress."
Junior Jessica Duckett and sophomore Brandi Hughes shined in the 60m hurdles, qualifying for the finals after stellar performances in the prelims. Duckett notched a time of 8.57 in the prelim before finishing the final in 8.52 (sixth place), while Hughes followed up her time of 8.51 in the qualifier with seventh-place, 8.55 finish.
Freshmen Danielle Wember and Pauline Helm set new personal records left and right Friday, both shining in the long jump. Helm finished fifth with a mark of 5.51m while Wember notched a sixth-place finish, posting a distance of 5.49m. Helm also recorded a personal best in the 60m hurdles, and Wember hit new top times marks in the 60m dash and 200m dash.
"In terms of what it was we were looking to accomplish here, which was progress from our athletes across the board, we saw that," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson said. "We made progress today, and I'm looking forward to more of that in the coming weeks."
