NEW ORLEANS -- The Green Wave roll on with their indoor season Friday, bussing to Baton Rouge for the Bayou Bengal Invitational, hosted by LSU inside the Carl Maddox Field House. The meet opens Friday afternoon, with events slated to start at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE MEET
The Green Wave will compete against a strong field featuring numerous Louisiana-based schools, including LSU, UNO, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Nicholls State, UL Lafayette and more. Tulane athletes will compete in almost a dozen track and field events, including the women's 60m hurdles, women's 60m dash, women's one mile run, women's 400m dash, women's 800m run, women's 200m dash, women's 3000m run, women's weight throw, women's pole vault and women's long jump.
"This meet's a wonderful opportunity for all of our field event athletes and straight-away short sprinters to continue making progress," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson said. "We're going to have some distance runners that don't always compete in the indoor meets, and they'll have a chance to race and test themselves. We're giving our kids an opportunity to improve and advance themselves this season."
Tulane is returning to the Carl Maddox Field House for the second time this season. The Green Wave began 2018 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, setting numerous personal records and earning a win in the one mile race. Redshirt junior Emma Newton won the one mile race, notching a time of 5:11.90 to take the top spot, while Markel placed second in the pole vault.
Neither Newton or Markel, however, will compete this Friday, instead sitting out to rest. Peterson said he's looking to see continued progress and development from his other athletes.
"Our kids are going to be challenged at a high-level," Peterson said. "The hurdlers, the sprinters, the long-jumpers, the pole-vaulters. All of those athletes are going to be tested at a pretty high level simply by going up against LSU."
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Rebekah Markel continued her steak in the pole vault event last Friday at the Dr. Sander Invitational inside the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in New York, setting a new personal record for the fourth straight meet while also posting the third-best mark in program history.
Markel's vault of 4.15m (13-07.25) earned her a second-place finish and bested her previous top mark of 4.07m (13-04.25), which she set earlier in January at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. Before that, the junior posted a mark of 4.05m (13-03.50) at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, which had topped her previous personal best of 4.00m (13-01.50), which she set earlier this season at the BSC Panther Icebreaker in Birmingham, Ala.
With the mark of 4.15m, Markel now owns the third-best pole vault measurement in Tulane history. Markel sits behinds only Merritt Van Meter and Alyssa Applebee, who own posted marks of 4.27m and 4.22m, respectively.
Freshmen Danielle Wember and Pauline Helm set new personal records left and right in New York as both shined in the long jump. Helm finished fifth with a mark of 5.51m while Wember notched a sixth-place finish, posting a distance of 5.49m. Helm also recorded a personal best in the 60m hurdles, and Wember hit new top times marks in the 60m dash and 200m dash.
"Both Danielle and Pauline made good progress last week in New York," Peterson said. "They're getting more time on the runway and working on their technique, and I'm hopeful they'll continue making progress."
