NEW LONDON, Connecticut – Strong winds on Sunday prevented teams from sailing the remaining four races in the Yale Women's Regatta, forcing the day one results to stand after just ten races on the water.
"Believe it or not, there is such a thing as too much wind to sail, and we typically don't attempt racing in winds over 30 knots (35Â mph)," Higgins mentioned regarding the weekend's weather delay and cancellation.
Because Sunday's forecast predicted extremely high winds, the 14 teams sailed right up until sunset on Saturday to get as many races in as possible.
The Tulane sailing team earned a final No. 12 finish with 221 total points after 20 races.Â
"The first day of the Yale Women's Regatta was long and tough, with fantastic sailing conditions until the end," head coach Charles Higgins said. "This was without a doubt the toughest fleet our ladies have competed in, and it's good to see the progress we make with the little things each week."
Freshman skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan with freshman crew Amelia Schofield and senior crew Grace Bloomfield teamed up to sail the Division A races, finishing in 11th of the 14 teams. The team totaled 90 points in ten races, earning a team-high fourth place finish in the sixth race of the day.
Sophomores skipper Katherine Byrnes and crew Alanna Austin handled the Division B competition, earning a total of 131 points in ten races to take a No. 13 overall finish.
"We had a few missed opportunities [Saturday]Â where we started very well only to have a little mistake set us back, and at this level the consequences are harsh," Higgins added.
The host Yale Bulldogs led the regatta, totaling 66 points after 20 total races, followed by the Brown Bears and the Harvard Crimson with 90 and 107, respectively.
The Green Wave bring competition back to New Orleans on Saturday, hosting both the Tulane Women's Regatta and the Baldwin Wood Regatta on Lake Pontchartrain. The team will also participate in the SIESAÂ Match Race Championship on the road next Saturday and Sunday for a total of three regattas in the weekend.
