NEW ORLEANS – The final cross country race of Emmanuel Rotich's career is coming on Saturday, and the Tulane senior is ready to make an impact.
One week after placing fourth at the NCAA South Central Regional to qualify for the national championship, Rotich will compete for that national title in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday morning.
The 10K race is set to begin at 11:45 a.m. on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course, with temperatures during the race hovering below freezing. Forecasts as of Friday morning are calling for a partly cloudy day with a high of 32 degrees.
Tulane fans will not have to brave the cold to watch the race, though. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack for a cost, and live results will be available online as well.
Rotich, who won the South Central Regional in 2016 and 2017, will be making his third appearance at the NCAA Championship on Saturday. In 2016 as a sophomore he placed 85th in the country, posting a strong first showing at the national meet. Last season, he fell early in the race and never fully recovered, taking 191st place out of 250 to end his junior season.
As a senior, he has the advantage of having raced on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course already once this season. Back in October, Rotich and the Green Wave ran at the Pre-National Invitational on the same course he will be using Saturday. In that race against some of the nation's best, Rotich took 39th while running in just his second race of the year.
Rotich claimed the American Athletic Conference championship in late October for the second consecutive year and also won the Texas A&M Invitational in September, his first appearance of the season.
