NEW ORLEANS – The postseason is in full swing for the Green Wave cross country teams as they will compete at the NCAA South Central Regional in College Station, Texas, on Friday morning.
At Friday's regional, Tulane has a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, on November 17. To reach the national championship meet, Tulane must finish as one of the top two teams in the regional races. Green Wave individuals can also make the national championship if they finish among the top four individuals who are not on automatically qualifying teams.
The latter scenario is what happened for the last two years for Emmanuel Rotich, who won the South Central Regional on this same course in 2017. Rotich claimed the 2016 South Central Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as well. He will be looking to defend his South Central Regional title two weeks after claiming the crown at the American Athletic Conference Championship at Audubon Park.
Besides this year's regional being held at the same place as last year's, Tulane should be extra familiar with the Watts Cross Country Course as it competed at the Texas A&M Invitational on September 22. At that race, Rotich claimed a victory in his first meet of the season.
At a distance of 10 kilometers, Friday's race will be the longest distance Tulane's men have run this year. The women's race, which is first at 9:15 a.m., will be a 6K. The men's race will follow at 10:15 a.m. Weather conditions in College Station are expected to be cloudy in the morning with a 20 percent chance of rain.
Tulane will be competing against every other team in the South Central Region. The men will face No. 19 Arkansas as well as a Texas team that is currently in the "Receiving Votes" category in this week's national poll. On the women's side, the Green Wave will have to battle No. 5 Arkansas along with a Longhorns team that is receiving votes.
Live results will be available through Flash Results.
Besides Rotich, the Green Wave will also be represented by Joshua Cheruyot, Tom Coe, Patrick Dougherty, Piece Hill, Evans Kipchumba, and Carlos Zervigon on the men's side. Kipchumba and Zervigon won a race each earlier in September.
For the women, Reid Belanger, Rachel Maue, Mckenzie Melius, Nicole Phaneuf and Mary Catherine Stovall will make up the Green Wave roster. Melius won Tulane's season-opening race at Nicholls State.
Tulane has had two weeks to prepare for Friday's regional races. The Green Wave men most recently took sixth place at the AAC Championship. Rotich won the race for the second consecutive year and earned All-Conference status. He was joined on the all-conference team by Kipchumba who placed 15th overall as the Green Wave men took sixth.
On the women's side, Tulane came in 11th place as Melius crossed the finish line first among Green Wave runners in 28th place overall. Stovall also finished in the top 50, taking 49th place.
