Women's Tennis Cruises Past UTSA, 6-1

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team rallied behind a dominant effort in doubles play to pick up 6-1 non-conference home victory over UTSA on Friday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
"I'm really proud of them for the way they came out and battled," head coach Maria Brito said. "It's been a couple weeks since we've been home and it was pretty hot today. We played indoors in 18 degree weather on the road last weekend and it was 80 degrees outdoors today. They stayed very focused. We worked a lot on controlling what we can control, staying positive and being aggressive."
Laura Fabrizi and Ivone Alvaro made quick work of Laura Cabrera and Sonia Madronal at No. 2 doubles with a 6-1 victory, before Christina Sisti and Alex Alegre dismantled Ivana Ilic and Charleen Tiwari by the same score at the No. 3 spot in the lineup to clinch the first team point of the match heading into singles play.
Daniela La Fuente quickly pushed Tulane's (5-3) advantage to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win on court six, while Atkinson followed up a short while later with a 6-2, 6-3 victory on court one to push the Roadrunners to the brink. Fabrizi would clinch the match, 6-4, 6-4, on court two, before Alvaro held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (9) triumph on court three to make it 5-0 in favor of the Green Wave.
Sisti tallied the Wave's final point of the match, winning her first set on court five, 7-5, after trailing 5-3 in the frame, before easing her way to a 6-3 second-set victory. UTSA got on the scoreboard with a three-set, comeback win on court four.
Tulane remains at home to host South Alabama on Saturday, February 17. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
"We need to recover tonight and have a good stretch tonight," Brito said. "Tomorrow we need to come back with the same mindset and focus on every point."
