NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's tennis team scored its second victory over a top 25 opponent this season, rolling past 21st-ranked Texas Tech, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
"We played until about 12:15 in the morning Friday into Saturday against a really tough Mississippi State team, but had some eye-opening conversations that night and the next morning and we challenged some guys in ways they haven't been before," head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras said. "We had a really tough practice on Saturday and the guys were holding each other accountable in a different way than they're used to. It was interesting to see how everyone responded to that and stepped up."
The Green Wave (5-3) established its dominance over Texas Tech (12-4) with the start of doubles play, as 50th-ranked Tyler Schick and Luis Erlenbusch closed out No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 victory, before Hamish Stewart and Tim Ruetzel finished off their opponent in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, as Stewart used an ace on the final serve to clinch the doubles point and give Tulane a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
"It's about dealing with adversity," Booras said. "They came out and dealt with it well. Whether we were up or down, those guys came back and dealt with it. That's what I'm most proud of with these guys today."
The Wave wouldn't give the Red Raiders an inch with the start of singles play, claiming the first set on all six courts, including tiebreakers on courts one, two and three. Ruetzel was first to finish, earning an easy 6-3, 6-2 win on court six to increase the lead to 2-0 in the overall contest.
Playing at the No. 4 spot in the lineup for the first time this season, the 95th-ranked Schick extended the advantage to 3-0 when he put away Ilgiz Valiev, 7-5, 6-2, for his fifth straight win and improving his record to 6-1 in dual matches.
Despite trailing 5-2 in the first set, Stewart bounced back to win it, 7-6(5), before cruising, 6-2, in the second frame to clinch the match for Tulane. He improved to 6-2 in dual matches and has also won five in a row. Erlenbusch finished just moments after Stewart's clincher with a 6-3, 7-6(4) triumph in his first appearance on court five this season.
Leading 5-0, the Green Wave remained relentless in its pursuit of perfection, as Ewan Moore closed out No. 2 singles, 7-6(4), 6-4 for his third straight win. Senior and 24th-ranked Constantin Schmitz battled his way to a 7-6(3) first-set victory on court one, but dropped the second frame, 6-4. He would rally in the tiebreaker, 11-9, to complete the 7-0 shutout.
"Being vocal sets the tone and your court and for everyone else in the team match," Booras said. "The fact that we never let off the gas is probably what kept Texas Tech down and always straining to get back up. When the team knows that, it's the lack of negative that means so much. I was very pleased with the maturity these guys showed dealing with their errors and the positive lights."
Tulane will head back on the road to play at Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro on Friday, March 2 at 2 p.m., before continuing on to Nashville to face Vanderbilt on Sunday at 9 a.m.
