No. 22 Men's Tennis Upends Middle Tennessee, 5-2
Mar 2, 2018 | Men's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The 22nd-ranked Tulane men's tennis team rallied from a lost doubles point by taking five of six singles matches to claim a 5-2 road victory at Middle Tennessee on Friday afternoon at the Adams Tennis Complex.
"We started too passive today, which resulted in us losing the doubles point pretty quickly," head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras said. "We did a good job og responding well in singles to get the momentum back and turn it around in our favor."
The Blue Raiders (11-3) pounced on the Green Wave (6-3) with the start of doubles play, earning early breaks at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in the lineup. Despite holding a 4-3 lead on court three, Tulane could not overcome their early deficits and dropped a 6-1 decision on court two, before falling 6-2 on court three to surrender the doubles point.
The Green Wave gathered itself before singles, as Luis Erlenbusch quickly evened up the overall match with a 6-1, 6-4 win out of the No. 5 spot, before 24th-ranked Constantin Schmitz cruised past his opponent at the No. 1 position, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Wave their first lead of the day.
Reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Ewan Moore was next to finish, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 slot for his fourth straight win, before Hamish Stewart closed out his sixth win in a row, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position to clinch the match for the second time in as many contests.
Despite a setback on court four, Tim Ruetzel tacked on the fifth team point, outlasting his opponent, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (4), to improve to 4-3 in dual matches on the year.
Tulane will make a short trip to Nashville to take on No. 34 Vanderbilt on Sunday, March 4. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m. (CT).
