Men's Tennis Claims 5-2 Road Win at Auburn
Mar 15, 2018 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 34/24 Tulane men's tennis team fell behind early with a lost doubles point, but stormed back with five singles victories to claim its fourth straight win, 5-2, at Auburn on Thursday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The comeback marks just the second time this season the Green Wave won the overall match despite losing two of three doubles contests.
"This is a good win over a seasoned program that will help us get back into a rhythm as we head into the home stretch of the season," head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras said. "We need to turn some things around in doubles because we can't keep giving away that point and putting all the pressure on us in singles. The guys know that."
Tulane (10-5) fell behind quickly in doubles play when Auburn (9-9) scored a 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position in the lineup, but Constantin Schmitz and Ewan Moore evened it up with their third consecutive win, 6-2, from the No. 1 spot. The Tigers would prevail however, winning by a break in the No. 3 slot, 6-4, to clinch the first team point and take a 1-0 lead into singles.
"The guys did a good job today of keeping their heads up after a tough doubles point," Booras said. "I like how we came out in singles, understood what our game plan was and executed right off the bat against a tough SEC team."
The Green Wave surged to start singles, as Luis Erlenbusch tied up the overall match with a dominant, 6-0, 6-2 win on court five, before the 15th-ranked Schmitz closed out his opponent on court one, 6-3, 6-0, to take the lead with his 11th victory of the spring. Tulane pushed Auburn to the brink, 3-1, when Tyler Schick finished off Tad Maclean, 6-2, 6-3, on court four to record his fifth straight win and eighth in his last 10.
The Tigers cut their deficit to one, 3-2, when 104th-ranked Matteo De Vincentis earned a straight set victory on court four, but the 77th-ranked Moore clinched the match for the Wave with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph on court two. Tim Ruetzel tacked on the fifth and final team point with a 6-4, 6-3 on court six to tally his fifth straight win and improve his record to 10-4 this spring.
Tulane will take a six-day break before returning home to host LSU next Wednesday, March 21. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m., at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
