Mertz, McHugh Reach Double-Digit Wins in No. 17 Beach Volleyball's Perfect Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Green Wave's No. 1 pair of senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh claimed their 10th win of the season, and No. 17 Tulane beach volleyball went undefeated at the Blazer Beach Duals, winning duals against Louisiana Monroe and UAB on Saturday to conclude the weekend. The Green Wave improve to 9-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
#17 Tulane 3, Louisiana Monroe 2
Tulane started the final day at the Blazer Beach Duals with a 3-2 win over ULM, extending its win streak to four.Â
A brief lightning delayed slowed the action, but the Green Wave jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Freshmen Lauren Orlich and Gabriella Becerra, playing as the No. 5 pair, and junior Anna Chin and freshman Addie Hermstad, playing at the No. 4, won in straight sets to give Tulane the advantage.
Orlich and Becerra took down ULM's duo by a score of 21-15, 21-16 while Chin and Hermstad won 21-11, 21-9.
Mertz and McHugh claimed their 10th win of the season by defeating ULM's No. 1 pair of Gabby Love and Grace Convey. Tulane's top duo won in straight sets (21-14, 21-6) to continue their perfect weekend.
#17 Tulane 4, UAB 1
The Green Wave earned their first conference win of the season, taking down UAB by a score of 4-1 in the afternoon session and extending the win streak to five. Tulane nearly swept UAB as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Mertz and McHugh fell in three sets, 19-21, 21-13, 12-15, giving UAB its only flight win of the dual.
Senior Lan Nguyen and sophomore Tarin Mergener, playing as the Green Wave's No. 2 duo, won in straight sets, as did freshmen Rio Frohoff and Ashley Delgado. Frohoff and Delgado, Tulane's No. 4 pair, won 21-19, 21-16.
The pair of Chin and Hermstad played in flight three and won in three sets against UAB's Tressa Buckland and Kaylee McClure. Tulane's No. 5 duo Orlich and Becerra also took a flight victory in three sets, winning by a score of 19-21, 21-19, 15-12.
UP NEXT
The Green Wave are back on the sand courts next weekend, when they travel upriver to Baton Rouge for the Tiger Beach Challenge at LSU. Tulane starts the competition with a tripleheader on Friday, facing conference foe College of Charleston, Spring Hill and No. 15 Stetson, before wrapping up the weekend against more conference opponents in No. 20 FAU and No. 7 LSU on Saturday.
