NEW ORLEANS - No. 18 Tulane beach volleyball will spend the first weekend of spring break in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, heading to LSUÂ this Saturday and Sunday for the Tiger Beach Challenge. The Green Wave play College of Charleston, Spring Hill and No. 15 Stetson on Saturday and take on No. 20 FAU and host No. 7 LSU on Sunday.
QUOTE
"We're well into the conference season, and it's definitely one of the more exciting parts of the year. We expect to play great. I thought we finished the tournament last weekend playing really good volleyball. We're playing at a good level, we're used to playing really good opponents and that will continue this weekend. Three opportunities this weekend to get conference wins, and those are important for seeding for the [CCSA] tournament. We'll have numerous opportunities to improve our development by playing and, hopefully, defeating good teams." -Head coach Wayne Holly
BACK IN ACTION
Tulane plays five duals across the two-day competition, starting with a tripleheader on Saturday. The Green Wave start the action at 11 a.m. on Saturday against conference opponent College of Charleston and later that day play Spring Hill and No. 15 Stetson.
The Green Wave begin day two at 12 p.m., facing conference foe No. 20 FAU at 12 p.m. before finishing the weekend against another conference opponent in No. 7 LSU at 2 p.m.
Tulane faces three nationally-ranked teams this weekend, marking its most difficult slate of competition opponents to date.Â
"We crave great competition," Holly said. "We deliberately schedule these teams because we know they're traditionally strong programs, and that's who we want to play. Any great competitor wants to play a match where the result is in doubt, and if you emerge victorious, that's a win you can be really proud of."
Tulane played LSU, Stetson and Spring Hill in the fall preseason, facing off against the schools at the Gulf Shores Collegiate Clash in October.
LAST TIME OUT
The Green Wave went undefeated at the Blazer Beach Duals, going 4-0 across the two-day competition.
Tulane swept Mercer and Austin in day one before winning duals against Louisiana Monroe (3-2) and conference foe UAB (4-1) in day two on Saturday to conclude their weekend. The Wave recorded their first conference win of the season and improved to 9-3 overall.
No. 1 pair of senior Madeline Mertz and sophomore Kaylie McHugh claimed their 10th win of the season, earning dual victories against top pairs from Mercer, Austin Peay and Louisiana Monroe. The pair won in straight sets (21-14, 21-10) against Mercer's No. 1 duo before also taking down Austin Peay's No. 1 in straight sets (21-10, 21-15) to open the competition.
In day two, Mertz and McHugh claimed their team-high 10th win of the season by defeating ULM's No. 1 pair of Gabby Love and Grace Convey. Tulane's top duo won in straight sets (21-14, 21-6).
Freshman Addison Hermstad made her collegiate debut and earned the first win of her career while playing with junior Anna Chin. As Tulane's No. 4, the pair went undefeated across the two-day event.
