NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team got back on track with an impressive 4-0 home win over UL Monroe on Friday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
"It was definitely a full team effort today," head coach Maria Brito said. "We came out with one word today and it was 'intensity.' Overall, I think they did a great job with that and I'm so proud of them. We've had some tough matches and they finally put the pieces together."
Tulane (9-10) exhibited great focus and intensity with early breaks on all three doubles courts to create some separation. Sofia Kurtz and Daniela La Fuente cruised to a 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, before Ivone Alvaro and Elena Muller broke away with a 6-3 triumph from the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point.
"Last year, they lost a really close one to this team," Brito said. "This year, they really came out and wanted to win, and they did that for themselves and Tulane. I'm really happy for them."
The Green Wave faced some adversity in singles and trailed in the first set on as many as four courts, but were able to overtake UL Monroe (7-7) and claim the first frame in four of the contests. Playing on court five, Muller extended the Wave's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory, before Laura Fabrizi pushed the Warhawks to the brink with a 6-4, 6-2 win on court three.
Christina Sisti would clinch the match just a few minutes after Fabrizi's triumph with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court six to notch her fourth straight win and improve her record to a team-best 14-7 for her sophomore campaign.
Tulane remains home to host a Senior Day doubleheader against Southern Miss and Southern University on Sunday, March 31. The Green Wave will face the Golden Eagles at noon, before taking on the Jaguars at 3 p.m.
