Mar 31, 2018 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team sent its senior class out with a 4-1 win over Southern Miss, followed by a 4-0 victory against Southern University to complete a Senior Day doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
MATCH #1
Tulane (10-10) got the day started with an impressive showing in doubles, as senior Sade Atkinson and sophomore Laura Fabrizi cruised to a 6-0 shutout at the No. 1 spot. Junior Sofia Kurtz - who partook in Senior Day festivities as she will graduate in May - and freshman Daniela La Fuente clinched the doubles point from the No. 3 spot to establish the necessary momentum heading into singles.
The Green Wave maintained its confidence by claiming the first set on four of six singles courts, as sophomore Ivone Alvaro was nearly flawless in a 6-1, 6-0 victory on court two, before sophomore Christina Sisti dismantled her opponent, 6-1, 6-3, on court six to push the advantage to 3-0 in the overall match.
Southern Miss (16-4) got on the scoreboard with a straight set win on court four, but Fabrizi pulled off a huge comeback after taking her first set, 6-0, and falling behind 5-1 in the second. She rallied to win four consecutive games to tie, 5-5, and eventually forced a 6-6 tiebreaker that she won, 7-1, to clinch the match, snapping the Golden Eagles nine-match winning streak.
