Women's Tennis Tops ULL, 4-1, for Fourth Straight Win
Apr 13, 2018 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - A slow start following a 12-day hiatus for the Tulane women's tennis team showed early in Friday afternoon's match, but the Green Wave bounced back from a lost doubles point to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-1, in a neutral site match at the UNO Tennis Center.
The victory is Tulane's (12-10) first this season when losing the doubles point.
"We started really flat with our doubles play," head coach Maria Brito said. "It was tough with the break and we weren't playing at home, but I challenged the girls and they really stepped up."
The Green Wave looked as though they were in great shape when Sade Atkinson and Laura Fabrizi cruised to a 6-0 victory at the No. 1 position over Abby Johnson and Dana Radovanovic. Unfortunately, the Wave fell behind in the other two battles, dropping a 6-0 decision at the No. 3 spot, before a 6-3 defeat at No. 2, giving the Ragin' Cajuns (14-10) the first team point of the match.
Tulane responded in singles, claiming the first set on all six singles courts, including court two where Fabrizi fell behind, 5-2, but came back to win, 7-6(4). Elena Muller tied up the overall match with a dominating, 6-2, 6-1 win on court five. Daniela La Fuente was close behind, propelling the Green Wave ahead, 2-1, when she finished off a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court four.
Atkinson topped Kelly Drew, 6-4, 6-4, on court one, before Christina Sisti clinched the match and earned her seventh straight win, 6-2, 6-4, on court six. Despite leading 5-2 in the second set on courts two and three, respectively, the matches went unfinished.
"We need to use this momentum going into the conference tournament," Brito said. "We've been working so hard mentally and physically, and they're ready to compete on a bigger stage."
Tulane will await seeding in the 2018 American Athletic Conference Championships which will take place April 17-21 in Dallas, Texas at SMU.
