CINCINNATI – Senior Jacqueline Esmay set a new school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 58.27m and sprinters junior Jessica Duckett and sophomores Maya Harewood and Brandi Hughes qualified for finals, as Tulane track and field opened the 2018 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in spectacular fashion on Friday night. The women's team sits in sixth place entering day two of the competition.
QUOTES
"It's just about as well as we've done team-wide on the first day of competition since we've been members of the American Athletic Conference. The absolute highlight of the day is Jackie Esmay in the hammer. She's had a rough time in conference championship competition throughout her career, but today she was spectacular. A new personal record, a new school record - she competed so well and probably threw far enough to get her into the NCAA Regional meet for the first time in her career."
"Bridgid had a good performance, placing sixth in the 10,000m race. She has improved so much since the end of the fall semester, and she just ran a great race tonight, following a really smart race plan. Maya ran a lifetime best in the 200m, and that's what we hope for at this time of year. Jessica and Brandi are going into the final in the 400m hurdles with a really great opportunity to do something big for our team. And then, Pauline - she's going into day two in a good spot to also do some things, move up into scoring position and help the team by the time it's all said and done."
"On the men's side, Carlos and Joshua in the 10,000m were better than they were projected coming into the meet. Devin and Corey gained really valuable experience in the 200m moving forward. Antonius - I know that he's feeling bad about tripping and falling on hurdle one tonight in his senior season in his final individual race - has made a big impact on our team. He's been a leader and a reliable athlete that we've been able to count on throughout his career. We're going to miss the contributions he makes both on and off the track."
"Looking forward to tomorrow, we have a lot of exciting things happening both on the track and the field. We're looking to building on the positive results we had today and continue the momentum as the meet unfolds. Hopefully when the meet ends, the results will be good for us."
-Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson
HOW IT HAPPENED
Esmay made the biggest waves for Tulane in day one of the competition. The senior finished fourth in the hammer throw with a school record-breaking mark of 58.27m (191-2) which tops her previous career best of 57.48m that she set in April of 2017 and puts her in line for a bid to the NCAA East Regional.
On the track, Harewood qualified for Sunday's 200m dash final with a personal best of 24.07 (+.3 m/s) in the prelim while Duckett and Hughes earned bids for Sunday's 400m hurdles final with dominant performances in Friday night's prelim. Freshman Bridgid Selfors delivered a brilliant performance in the 10,000m race, earning the Green Wave three points with a sixth-place finish (36:45.79).
