NEW ORLEANS – Tulane swimming & diving head coach Katie Robinson was one of six American college coaches selected to represent the United States as a delegate at the US College Sports Camp in Thailand in late April.
Â
Held from April 27-29, the camp was attended by 200 children and parents. By receiving instruction from six American college coaches, camp attendees had the opportunity to learn about initial eligibility, NCAA rules, recruiting timelines, and how to choose the right college.
Â
Robinson also taught technical skills, mental training, fitness basics and explained how athletes can use their athletic talents to study in the United States.
Â
"This experience was one of a kind," Robinson said. "As a coach I value my role as an educator and to have this opportunity to teach technique, fitness skills and how the NCAA works abroad was an honor for me. Learning about Thai culture and how their sports operate was fascinating, and I feel lucky to have been able to coach with such an elite group of coaches."
Â
Three sports were featured at this year's US College Sports Camp: basketball, swimming, and volleyball. Swimming held its portion of the camp at the aquatics center at Thammasat University Rangsit Campus.
Â
"While I have coached many swim camps in the USA and thoroughly enjoy my role as a collegiate coach, I feel my duty to grow the game globally as well," Robinson said. "Working with the youth in Bangkok was incredibly enriching both personally and professionally. I eagerly shared my knowledge in swimming and feel that I learned just as much from them.
Â
"It's important to me to continue to grow and learn at all stages in my career. Coaching globally put me in a position to think outside the box and simplify instruction. Going back to the basics can create a new, fresh vision of progression. While I am deeply honored to have been selected for this camp, I am equally grateful for the experience and growth that has come from it."
Â
The event was sponsored by the Singha Corporation for the past six years, and this year also sponsored by Mazda and Doi Kham. This was the Singha Corporation's sixth sports education program featuring American college coaches.
