TAMPA, Fla. - Juniors Jessica Duckett and Emmanuel Rotich are heading to Track Town, USA.
The two Tulane athletes punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, from June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon, at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday inside USF Track & Field Stadium. Duckett will represent the Green Wave in the women's 400m hurdles while Rotich will run in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duckett had a spectacular Friday, highlighted by her qualification for the national championship in the 400m hurdles. In Friday's quarterfinal, she recorded a new personal-best time of 57.30 to finish in 11th place and earn a spot at the championship for the second time in her career.
Rotich followed up her championship-qualifying performance with a brilliant effort of his own. The junior finished first overall in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:43.05, earning him a spot in the national championships for the second time in his career.
Duckett's day started with a strong performance in the 100m hurdles. She placed second in her heat and eighth overall with a time of 13.12 (+2.1 m/s) to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals, which begins at 1:50 pm ET, and put herself in position for another championship qualification.
Sophomore Brandi Hughes and freshman Kyah Loyd also ran in the 100m hurdles, finishing 38th and 47th, respectively, but failing to advance to tomorrow's quarterfinals.
On the men's side in the track events, sophomore Raymond Kibet's 22nd-place finish with a time of 47.03 in the quarterfinals of the men's 400m race resulted in the end of his season, as he fell short of qualifying for the national championship.
In the field events, junior pole vaulter Rebekah Markel was the lone Tulane competitor in action on Friday. Markel cruised through her first two vaults, clearing 3.93m and 4.08m on her first attempts.
She could not get over the bar at 4.18m, however, and finished tied for 13th, just missing out on qualifying for the national championship, as she needed to finish in the top 12.
UP NEXT
Only two athletes will compete for the Green Wave tomorrow, but there is a lot at stake.
Senior Jacqueline Esmay is in action first thing Saturday morning, when she looks to qualify for the national championships in the women's hammer throw at 8:45 a.m. ET. Duckett competes in the 100m hurdles quarterfinals at 1:50 p.m. ET, with another national championship-qualifying spot on the line.
