Release from The American
NEW ORLEANS - Junior Emmanuel Rotich was named the American Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week, in an announcement made by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Rotich competed in the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, California, last Thursday, leaving with a first-place finish and a new season-best time in the 3000m steeplechase. He ran his way to the top of The American's performance list with a time of 8:40.66, which leads the conference by .92 seconds and ranks as the fourth-best time in the nation this year.
"We - Emmanuel and I - have made a concerted effort this year to bring him along a little bit more slowly than we have in the past," director of cross country and track & field Eric Peterson said. "Hopefully, he's going to really be peaking at the right time as we get into the postseason. I think last week's performance at the Payton Jordan Invitational is an indication that things are moving in the right direction. He competed really well, he beat a very good and competitive field out there and I'm very pleased to see the conference honor him with this award."
The honor gives Rotich momentum ahead of this coming weekend, when the Green Wave travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to compete in the The American Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 11-13. Rotich will look to defend his conference title in this event at the championship, as he won the 3000m steeplechase event at the conference meet last season before qualifying for the event at the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round.
Rotich finished seventh at the regional meet with a personal-best time of 8:36.40 to qualify for the event at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where he earned a ninth-place finish of 8:40.64.
