Men's Tennis Announces 2018-19 Schedule

NEW ORLEANS – After winning the program's first conference championship in the post-Katrina era and earning a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2018, the Tulane men's tennis team unveiled its schedule for the 2018-19 season in an announcement by 10th-year head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras.
In addition to the fall slate, the Green Wave will challenge a minimum of nine opponents that earned NCAA Tournament bids last spring, including Columbia, Florida State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Tennessee, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. Each of those teams finished the season ranked inside the top 40 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) team poll. Tulane closed out the year at No. 28 which also marked its highest final standing in the post-Katrina era.
"The fall schedule is great this year with a ton of opportunities for all the guys on the team," Booras said. "Some will play in pro tournaments, as well as the top-level college national championships and standard college events. We want our guys to get as much experience as possible in the midst of our training block to get them ready for the spring season."
The Green Wave will send players to nine different collegiate tournaments in the fall, not including a trio of USTA Futures pro circuit events. Tulane will compete in draws at Alabama, Virginia and Rice, before September closes with the pre-qualifying rounds of the 2018 Oracle/ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
The All-American Championships roll through the first week of October, before the ITA Southern Regional takes place Oct. 18-21 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Tulane will close the fall with matches at the CCB Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas and the Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships in Surprise, Ariz.
"The fall really sets us up and defines a pecking order for the team as we prepare for the spring," Booras said. "It helps myself and assistant coach Chris Simpson get an idea of what our dual match lineup will look like."
Tulane returns six letterwinners from last year's roster, led by nationally-ranked junior and two-time All-American Athletic Conference performer Ewan Moore. The Green Wave also welcomes four newcomers, including graduate Felix Ewers (USC Upstate), junior Dane Esses (Pepperdine), sophomore Akos Kotorman (Baylor) and freshman Benji Jacobson.
After opening the spring with a home doubleheader against Alcorn State on Jan. 21 at the City Park Tennis Center, Tulane returns to Tallahassee for ITA Kickoff Weekend at Florida State University – the same site that hosted the Green Wave in its NCAA Tournament first round matchup last spring. The No. 3 seed in the four-team draw, the Wave will face Tennessee on Jan. 25 with a chance to advance and take on the winner of Florida State and Texas Tech.
The winner of the draw punches a ticket to the Oracle/ITA National Team Indoor Championships which will be held Feb. 14-17 in Chicago.
"This will probably be the strongest or equal to the strongest schedule we've had," Booras said. "A few of the teams we'll face finished or spent time ranked in the top 10 last season, and we'll play 16 teams that were ranked in the top 60. We're playing a schedule that is as tough as any program in the country, but we're also giving our student-athletes the best collegiate experience possible."
Tulane returns home to host TCU and Texas the following weekend to conclude February, before trips to Columbia, UCF and USF open the March slate. The Wave is back in City Park to welcome Old Dominion and Pepperdine on March 15 and 17.
After a trip to the west coast for three matches against a field to be determined at the San Diego Invitational, the Green Wave ends March at home against a pair of conference foes, Tulsa and SMU on March 29 and 31.
Road contests at Memphis and Rice wrap the regular season, before Tulane heads to Orlando April 18-21 in search of a repeat performance at the American Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held on the USTA National Campus in Orlando. The site will also host the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Under a newly-adopted format for the NCAA Championships, the normal first and second rounds of the 64-team field will be held across 16 regional sites May 4-6, before one more stop at third-round sites of the highest advancing seeds May 11-12. Orlando will host the final eight teams for the quarterfinals, semifinals and title matches May 16-19.
The NCAA singles and doubles championships will take place May 20-25 after the conclusion of the team championships.
