NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team faces its first big challenge of the young spring season when it heads to Tallahassee, Fla., to face 18th-ranked Tennessee in the first round of the 2019 ITA Kickoff on Saturday, January 26. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m., (CST) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center located on Florida State University's campus.
In the four-team pod, the Green Wave (2-0) hold the No. 3 seed, while the Volunteers are No. 2 in the draw. The winner of Saturday's matchup advances to Sunday's final against the winner between No. 19 Florida State and Texas Tech. A consolation match will also be played Sunday at 10 a.m.
With two victories, Tulane advances to the 16-team ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be held February 14-17 in Chicago.
GREEN WAVE HISTORY AT ITA KICKOFF
Tulane competes in ITA Kickoff action for the fifth consecutive season and has won its first-round match in each of the last three years. Last season the Green Wave knocked off host and No. 19 California, 4-3, on its home court, before falling to No. 12 Stanford the following day. The Wave defeated Pepperdine in Los Angeles at the 2016 event, and again in Berkeley, Calif., in 2017.
SCOUTING TENNESSEE
The Volunteers (2-0) hold a No. 18 national team ranking according to the latest ITA poll following a doubleheader triumph, 4-3 and 6-1, over Charlotte last weekend. Tennessee possess three ranked singles players in No. 45 Timo Stodder, No. 75 Scott Jones and No. 106 Adam Walton. Stodder and Preston Touliatos also combine as the nation's No. 41 doubles tandem. The Volunteers last faced the Green Wave in 2001, with the Vols holding on for a 4-3 win.
HELLO, OLD FRIEND
When Tulane takes the courts against Tennessee, they'll be matching up against a familiar foe, as Vols assistant coach James McKie served in the same role for the Green Wave for two seasons (2015-17), helping the Wave earn bids to the first two of their three straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE
The Seminoles (7-0) own a No. 19 national team ranking according to the latest ITA poll and enter the weekend with numerous matches already under their belts. They have surrendered just five team points in their seven matches, with their most recent victory coming in a 4-3 triumph over California on January 20 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Orlando. Florida State possesses just one ranked singles player in No. 84 Rana-Roop Singh Bhular who holds a 5-0 mark so far this spring. Tulane and Florida State could meet for the seventh time overall and the first time since 1997. The Seminoles own a 4-2 lead in the all-time series that dates back to the first matchup in 1964.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
The Red Raiders (4-0) are receiving votes but stand unranked in the latest ITA poll. Including a pair of 4-0 home wins over New Mexico and Lamar last Sunday, they also defeated Bryant (5-2) on a neutral court and scored a road win at Tulsa (4-3), on Jan. 11. Texas Tech possesses one ranked singles player in No. 70 Bjorn Thomson, while he and Parker Wynn comprise the nation's No. 17 doubles team. Tulane notched an impressive 7-0 shutout over the (then) 21st-ranked Red Raiders in New Orleans last February.
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
The Green Wave have four singles players and one doubles team listed in the ITA's rankings, while Tulane as a team is receiving votes in the team poll.
Luis Erlenbusch holds the Wave's top listing at No. 42, followed by Tyler Schick at No. 58, Felix Ewers at No. 120 and Tim Ruetzel at No. 125.
In doubles, Akos Kotorman and Tim Ruetzel check in as the nation's 29th-ranked tandem.
THE BOORAS EFFECT
Head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras begins his 10th season at the helm of the program and has led Tulane to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Tulane has increased its final ITA team ranking each of the last six seasons, finishing No. 28 overall last spring. In addition to producing four straight singles All-America honorees, Booras was named the 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and has been selected Louisiana Coach of the Year each of the last four seasons.
TOUGH TASKS AHEAD
Tulane will challenge a minimum of nine opponents that earned NCAA Tournament bids last spring, including Columbia, Florida State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Tennessee, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. Each of those teams finished the season ranked inside the top 40 of the ITA team rankings.
