
Modic Wins Pole Vault, Harewood Sets New Top-10 Time on Day 1 in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – Tulane picked up one event victory, two top-five finishes and had two alterations to the team's all-time top-10 on the first day of the Texas Tech Classic on Friday.
The Green Wave had a tremendous start to the evening as Nastja Modic won the 'B' Section of the pole vault when she cleared 3.87 meters on her first try. That clearance set a new college best for the freshman, and her mark is now the seventh-best in Tulane history.
Alex Potts was third by clearing 3.77 meters, and Rose Brutkiewicz and Megan Fitzgerald tied for ninth with a clearance of 3.52 meters.
The 400 saw Maya Harewood as the highest-placing Green Wave running, finishing 18th in 55.58 seconds. With a time conversion due to Lubbock's altitude, that time becomes 55.69 seconds and ties for the ninth-best time in program history.
Hunter Robinson was right behind her in 19th with a time of 55.74 seconds, Louise Jones was 30th in 58.95 and Oneke Gwan was 33rd in 59.57.
The distance medley relay team provided the Green Wave with another top-five finish as the team placed fourth in 12:14.59. The quartet of Mckenzie Melius, Louise Jones, Oneke Gwan and Emma Newton were seven seconds shy of a top-three placement.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Brandi Hughes qualified for the finals in the final qualifying spot, taking eighth place with a time of 8.44 seconds. Hughes followed that qualifying time with an even-better 8.40 in the finals for an eighth-place finish.
In the prelims of the 60 hurdles, Kyah Loyd took 11th in 8.51 seconds and Pauline Helm was 24th in 9.35 seconds.
Aldrianna Dupree won her heat in the 60 prelims with a time of 7.52 seconds to earn a spot in the event semifinals later in the evening. In that race, she bettered her time with a mark of 7.50 seconds but placed fifth in her heat. She finished 11th overall.
Kyah Loyd was fourth in her heat and 24th overall in the 60 with a time of 7.77 seconds.
In the triple jump, Trina Malej came in 12th by reaching a distance of 12.24 meters. The freshman went 12.07 meters on her first attempt but bettered that by 17 centimeters on her next attempt. She came just 14 centimeters shy of earning an additional three jumps in the final round.
Tulane will return to action in Lubbock on Saturday. Track events begin at noon with the field events starting in the morning.
