Yelamanchili Scores Major Upset Victory at ITA Southern Regional
Oct 18, 2019 | Women's Tennis
BATON ROUGE, La. - Competing in her second collegiate tournament, Tulane women's tennis freshman Lahari Yelamanchili recorded one of the biggest upset victories in program history with a three-set singles win over LSU's 11th-ranked Eden Richardson in the first round of the singles main draw at the 2019 ITA Southern Regional on Friday afternoon.
Playing in just her third singles match of the fall, Yelamanchili gutted out a 7-6(4) first set win against the top-seeded Richardson, but dropped the second frame, 6-1. The freshman gathered herself for the final set and cruised to a 6-1 victory to finish off perhaps Tulane's biggest singles upset in its history.
Yelamanchili will face McNeese State's Dalia Ahmed in Saturday's second round.
Also recording impressive first round wins were junior Daniela La Fuente and freshman Mackenzie Clark. La Fuente eased her way to a 6-2, 6-2 win over UL Monroe's Emma Billon and will meet Alabama's Alba Cortina Pou in the round of 32. Clark also collected a quality victory, defeating Mississippi State's Tamara Racine, 6-4, 6-2. She will face 114th-ranked Taylor Bridges of LSU in Saturday's second round.
In doubles main draw action, Yelamanchili and Clark were the Green Wave's lone duo to win, as they outlasted a tandem from Samford, 8-5, to reach the round of 16.
