NEW ORLEANS, La. โย The Tulane volleyball team heads into a big weekend as the squad will travel to take on the division-leading Houston Cougars Friday night at 7 p.m., returning home on Sunday for the final home match of the regular season against the Temple Owls at 1 p.m. inside Fogelman in Devlin.
ย
The Green Wave will have a quick turnaround as the team returns home for the final home contest for its three-member senior class of Meghan Doyle, Erika Hansel and Kaylie McHugh. The trio will be honored following the team's contest against the Owls Sunday afternoon for their accomplishments over the last four years.
ย
With two weeks left in the regular season, Tulane still has a opportunity to make headway in the league and the division by the time the regular season ends next Sunday afternoon in Tennessee. The Green Wave will play two of the four teams ahead of them in the standings over the course of the next two weeks, beginning with a big showdown Friday against the Cougars.
ย
Tulane is 17-8 on the year and 7-5 in the American Athletic Conference after splitting a pair of home matches last weekend. The squad fell in three for the first time all year to Wichita State, while earning a split of the season series against Tulsa with a five-set victory last Sunday.
ย
With Cincinnati and UCF as virtual locks for the inaugural volleyball championship in Orlando November 22-24, the four remaining spots up for grabs look to be going to teams in the west. Houston leads the division with a 9-3 mark, followed by SMU with an 8-4 league record and Tulane and Tulsa with 7-5 league records. The division winners will get a bye to the semifinals of the tournament, with the remaining teams with the best conference records being seeded 3-6 and opening the tournament that Friday.
ย
The Green Wave will have a shot at avenging their earlier five-set loss to the Cougars on Friday at the Fertitta Center, trailing Houston by just two games in the standings. Next week, Tulane will face SMU in Dallas, before closing the season with a date against Memphis.
ย
Last week the team got a string of strong performances across the board, something Tulane will look to continue to have as the group makes its run to the end of the season.
ย
Junior Lexie Douglas was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll after averaging over four kills per set against Wichita State and Tulsa, as on Sunday she set a career high in kills with 22, while also earning her 10th double-double of the season. Douglas leads the team in kills, kills per set and service aces.
ย
The middle tandem of Kayla Dinkins and Lauryn Green have been tough for opposing defenses to stop, while Dinkins has been stopping lots of shots on her own this season. Dinkins continues to rank in the top 10 in the nation in blocks and blocks per set, while Green is hitting .346 for the year which leads the team and is second in the conference.
ย
Amanda Giardina had a career day against Tulsa on Sunday, serving up 37 assists and also had a double-double, leading the team with 513 assists and a 5.29 assist per set average.
ย
One of the three seniors that will be honored on Sunday, McHugh leads the team in digs with 438 this season, averaging 4.47 per set. Makala Heidelberg is next with 286, averaging 3.53 per set.
ย
Houston is 15-12 on the year coming into the match but is only 4-6 at home this season. Temple is 11-12 on the year and 2-10 against league foes, opening the weekend at UConn before heading to New Orleans to take on the Green Wave.
