
Indoor Track and Field Opens Season at Birmingham Southern

NEW ORLEANS â The Tulane indoor track and field team is set to open its 2019-20 season this weekend as the Green Wave head to Birmingham, Alabama to compete in the Birmingham Southern Panther Ice Breaker on Friday.
Tulane will compete against Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Central Arkansas, Georgia State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi College, Mississippi Valley, Samford and UAB in the meet, along with teams from Division II, Division III and NAIA schools.
The field events will begin at 9 a.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex, starting with the weight throw and followed by the shot put and long jump. The pole vault will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the triple jump at 1 p.m. and the high jump at 2 p.m.
Running events begin with the women's 3K at 9:30 a.m. and the men's 3K at 10 a.m. The 60-meter dash is next up at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the 60-meter hurdles at 12 p.m. The one-mile is set to start at 2 p.m., before the 400-meter, 800-meter and 200-meter races begin at the top of the next three hours. Relays will wrap up the meet as the final events, with the the distance medley relay at 5:45 p.m. and the 4x400 relay at 6:15 p.m.
Nineteen members of Tulane's team are making the trip to Birmingham this weekend, with one competing in the shot put, two in the high jump, three in the long jump, two in the pole vault and two in the triple jump. The Green Wave are sending three women to race in the 60-meter, four to run in the 200-meter and seven to face-off in the 400-meter.
Not only is this meet the first of the season for the Green Wave, but it's also the first for six student-athletes who are returning to the track after facing season-ending injuries last winter.
Graduate student Jessica Duckett, sophomore Aldrianna Dupree, senior Brandi Hughes, junior Kristina Leggas, junior Jordyn Lesh and sophomore Hunter Robinson are ready to get back in the competition after an off-season of recovery, while freshmen Maren Butler and Jing Ren are looking forward to this weekend's meet as the first of their collegiate careers.
The Olive and Blue finished first in last season's home opener in the BSC Ice Breaker, setting five new top-10 marks in the program record books while also adding five event wins and 19 top-five finishes.
