Dec 6, 2019 | Women's Swimming and Diving
ATLANTA – Three Tulane University swimmers posted personal best times on Friday as the Green Wave had another strong showing at the 2019 Toyota U.S. Open.Â
Â
The four-day event is being held at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech University.Â
Â
"This has really been a great meet for our team to gain experience on a worldwide stage and I think we have been handling the experience very well," head coach Leah Stancil said. "By competing in meets like this, it develops our team mentally and helps them prepare even more for competition on the college stage."
Â
Senior Olivia Johnson highlighted the day for the Green Wave, as she finished 12th in the 400-meter individual medley, clocking a personal-best time of 4:45.22. The Indiana native shaved nearly five seconds off her personal best time and was within a second of Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky in the preliminary race. Â
Â
"We have a consistent goal to race and this whole experience is to help us compete at the next level," Stancil said. "I want our team to see themselves in the A level heats. I want to make them feel like they can do it."
Â
Junior Kate McDonald also turned in a strong performance in the 100-meter breaststroke. McDonald's time of 1:11.16 was just shy of an Olympic Trial qualifying mark.Â
Â
Freshman Lilly Byrne was the third Tulane swimmer to post a personal best performance as she timed a mark of 2:04.79 in the 200-meter freestyle.Â
Â
