No. 19 Men's Tennis Suffers Road Setback at Texas Tech
Feb 10, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders (6-3) got the early edge in doubles play with a pair of 6-4 wins on courts one and two, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match. It marked the fifth straight match in which the Green Wave (4-3) were unable to secure the doubles point.
Texas Tech pushed its lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory at No. 2 singles, but Tulane responded when senior and 76th-ranked Tyler Schick tallied a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win over Artem Kapshuk in the No. 5 spot, before sophomore Hamish Stewart won his second match in as many days with a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Bjorn Thomson at No. 3 to draw the match even, 2-2.
Despite a straight-set defeat at No. 1 singles, it looked as if the Green Wave would extend the match when junior Dane Esses split sets in the No. 4 spot, but the Red Raiders turned the tide late in the second frame at No. 6 to seal a straight-set, match-clinching victory.
Tulane heads to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, which begin with first round action on Friday, February 15. The tournament draw will be released on Wednesday.
