No. 19 Men’s Tennis Faces No. 1 Ohio State in ITA Indoor Championships Opener

NEW ORLEANS – As the Green Wave continues their climb back to national prominence, the 19th-ranked Tulane men's tennis team embarks on yet another one of its firsts in program history when it heads to Chicago to compete in the prestigious and 45th-annual ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
First round play begins Friday, February 15 when No. 16 seed Tulane (4-3) meets the nation's No. 1 team and top-seeded Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. It will mark the first time the Green Wave plays the nation's top-ranked team in the post-Katrina era.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes (9-0) have a history at the ITA National Championships, having won the tournament in Houston in 2014. Ohio State possesses five ranked singles players in No. 2 J.J. Wolf, No. 12 Kyle Seelig, No. 62 John McNally, No. 86 Alex Kobelt and No. 101 Tim Seibert. The Bucks also have two doubles tandems near the top of the poll in No. 7 Seelig and Kobelt, as well as No. 11 Hunter Tubert and Martin Joyce.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
The Green Wave will face the winner or loser of the No. 8 Virginia and No. 9 Stanford at 3:30 p.m., on Saturday, before facing one more nationally-ranked team from the field on Sunday at a time to be determined.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane dropped a pair of road contests in Lubbock, Texas to No. 3 Mississippi State and Texas Tech last weekend. The Green Wave suffered a 4-1 defeat to the Bulldogs on Saturday, February 9, before a 4-2 setback to the Red Raiders the following day.
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA national team rankings released on February 6, the Green Wave received a No. 19 ranking.
Tulane possesses three singles players listed in the ITA's singles rankings, as Luis Erlenbusch holds the Wave's top singles mark at No. 42, followed Ewan Moore at No. 63 and Tyler Schick at No. 76.
On January 30, Tulane was ranked No. 17 in the team polls, marking the highest for the Green Wave in the post-Katrina era.
ITA NATIONAL TEAM INDOOR BERTH
With back-to-back wins Jan. 26-27 over No. 18 Tennessee and No. 19 Florida State in Tallahassee, Tulane punched its ticket to the 45th-annual ITA National Team Indoor Championships for the first time in program history. The 16-team tournament will be held February 15-18 in Chicago.
AWARDS IN THE AMERICAN
Junior Ewan Moore was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 29 for the first time this season and the second time in his career. Moore went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position and clinched both matches to secure consecutive top-20 upset wins for the Green Wave at ITA Kickoff Weekend. He clinched a three-set win in a third set tiebreaker over 45th-ranked Timo Stodder to seal the win over No. 18 Tennessee on Jan. 26, before topping host and No. 19 Florida State's Aziz Douglas in another three-set battle the following day.
THE BOORAS EFFECT
Head coach and director of tennis Mark Booras begins his 10th season at the helm of the program and has led Tulane to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Tulane has increased its final ITA team ranking each of the last six seasons, finishing No. 28 overall last spring. In addition to producing four straight singles All-America honorees, Booras was named the 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and has been selected Louisiana Coach of the Year each of the last four seasons.
TOUGH TASKS AHEAD
Tulane will challenge a minimum of nine opponents that earned NCAA Tournament bids last spring, including Columbia, Florida State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Tennessee, Texas, TCU and Texas Tech. Each of those teams finished the season ranked inside the top 40 of the ITA team rankings.
