Tulane Sailing Earns Sixth Place Finish in Nelson Roltsch Team Race
Feb 17, 2019 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane sailing team earned a sixth-place finish in the interconference Nelson Roltsch Team Race on Lake Pontchartrain, winning four races to defeat the University of Texas and Miami University.
"Today's conditions were entirely different from yesterday's," head coach Charles Higgins said. "With the windier conditions, the racing was fast-paced and exciting, and positions in races changed just as quickly."
The standings remained almost identical to those from the first day on the water, with the College of Charleston going undefeated to earn the win.
"We were certainly behind the top teams by a step or two yesterday but the team came out fresh and hungry today, nearly knocking off Stanford in the first race before losing right at the finish," Higgins added of Tulane's improvement from Saturday to Sunday.
Sophomore Caelan Watts, senior Harris Cram, freshman Grace Siwicki and freshman Ciara Rodriguez-Horan handled the skipper positions on day two of the regatta, teaming up with sophomore Kate Lenhard, junior Stephen Hahn, senior Sophie Ricker, senior Michael Conrad, senior Grace Bloomfield and senior Kat Robinson in the crew spots.
The Green Wave earned 1-2-3 scores in three of their four wins, recording an additional 1-2-5 finish in the remaining victory.
"That fight persisted throughout the day, and while our results may not have appeared better, we certainly took steps forward today to close the performance gap," Higgins added.
The Green Wave prepare to hit the road next weekend, heading to Charleston, South Carolina for the Charleston Women's Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.
