CHARLESTON, South Carolina – The Tulane sailing team had a successful day on the water in the Phebe Corkran King Women's Regatta, earning a fifth place finish among ten teams in the interconference competition.
"Today was a solid step forward for our program. Charleston is a notoriously difficult venue as the area has very strong currents, something that is difficult to simulate on Lake Pontchartrain," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The ladies were unfazed and came out with great focus this morning and posted some top finishes in the early races. Those finishes had us at the top of the leaderboard at one point, which is a first for the program at the varsity level."
Tulane led the regatta after three races, with the Division A boat earning consecutive second, third and first place finishes among some of the country's top teams. The Green Wave totaled 99 points after ten Division A and B races, checking in ahead of the Old Dominion, Michigan, Eckerd, University of Miami and and Georgia.
Freshman Ciara Rodriguez-Horan and senior Grace Bloomfield partnered to sail the Division A races, earning an impressive third place finish after Saturday's performance. The pair recorded eight top-five finishes, highlighted by a team best first-place finish in the third race of the day.
Freshman Grace Siwicki, senior Sophie Ricker and senior Kat Robinson teamed up to sail the Division B portion of the regatta, totaling 64 points to stand in eighth place. The team totaled four top-five finishes in the first ten races.
"We had a couple miscues later in the afternoon, and our inexperience certainly played a role," Higgins added of the team's performance. "But we learned a lot from those lessons and I'm proud of how well the ladies performed. We'll continue to build on this going forward, and ensure these lessons learned pay dividends for us in the future."
