Muller, Alvaro Lead Women's Tennis to Senior Day Shutout Win Over Southern Miss
Mar 30, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis team won its second straight match, 4-0, over Southern Miss behind the help of big victories by Elena Muller and Ivone Alvaro on Saturday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
The doubles point was tight in the early going, as the Golden Eagles (12-3) earned the first doubles win on court three, 6-1. Laura Fabrizi and Daniela La Fuente earned multiple early breaks before holding on for a 6-2 win on court two, before the 33rd-ranked duo of Muller and Alvaro held on for a 7-6(4) triumph on court one to give the Green Wave the 1-0 advantage.
Alvaro and Muller improved their record to 17-2 overall and 15-1 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup this spring.
The Wave remained in control in singles play, taking the first set on five of six courts. Alvaro was first to finish, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3, before La Fuente closed out a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 2 to push the advantage to 3-0 in the overall match.
It was fitting that Muller would have the chance to clinch and she took full advantage of the opportunity. After fighting through a tough first set, 7-6(6), she cruised in the second frame, 6-2, to notch Tulane's seventh win of the spring.
Tulane remains home to host Nicholls State and New Orleans in a home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3. Matches are scheduled to begin at 1 and 4 p.m., respectively at the City Park Tennis Center.
