Markel Wins The American's Field Athlete of the Week Honor

NEW ORLEANS – For the second time this outdoor season, Tulane senior pole vaulter Rebekah Markel was named the American Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Already topping the league in the pole vault with an earlier clearance this year of 4.21 meters, Markel got over the bar at 4.20 meters (13-9.25) on Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold meet, claiming a victory in a tiebreaker.
Markel has cleared at least 4.20 meters in three different meets this outdoor season and is the only pole vaulter in the conference to get over 4.20 meters in 2019. No other pole vaulter in the American Athletic Conference has cleared higher than 4.15 meters.
Already the school record holder indoors, Markel was also The American's conference champion in the event during the indoor season. Her current outdoor season best of 4.21 meters puts her ninth in the NCAA East Region and 29th in the nation so far in 2019.
This is the third Athlete of the Week honor for Markel in her career, as she was the indoor athlete of the week on February 12 and won the outdoor weekly award on April 2. Markel is the first Tulane athlete to win the outdoor weekly award twice in a single season since Jasmine Blocker in 2016.
Markel and the Green Wave track and field team will return to action this weekend in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, taking on the Southern Miss Open on Friday and Saturday.
