NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane track and field season may be over, but two rising sophomores from Slovenia are still competing internationally in June.
Trina Praprotnik Malej had a new personal record in the triple jump at the Slovenian Senior Championships on Saturday, reaching a distance of 12.76 meters (41-10.5).
Praprotnik Malej reached the NCAA East Regional during her freshman year with Tulane, jumping a then-best 12.67 meters at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in May to earn her spot in the NCAA rounds.
But on Saturday in her home country, she set a new best by nine centimeters. On her first jump of the day, she reached 12.69 meters before falling off a bit on her next two. But on her fourth attempt, she landed in the sand 12.76 meters away from the line. Praprotnik Malej placed fourth in the event.
The mark is just four centimeters shy of the qualifying standard for the European Under-23 Championships, and she will have one more chance to reach 12.80 meters at the Slovenian Under-23 Championships in two weeks.
Tomorrow in Slovenia, pole vaulter Nastja Modic will compete for a title in her event. Modic also reached the NCAA East Regional this season, coming up one place shy of a spot in the national championship meet.
