NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Tulane volleyball team returns home Wednesday to take on former rivals Southern Miss at 7 p.m. inside Fogelman in Devlin.
The Green Wave head into their final week of non-conference action in the regular season squaring off with the Golden Eagles on Wednesday, before heading to Baton Rouge this weekend to take on the LSU Tigers at the Maravich Center.
Tulane comes into the week with an 8-3 overall record, as last weekend the squad went 2-1 at the Holiday Inn – University Plaza Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky. The team earned four-set wins over Ohio State and Bowling Green, suffering defeat in the tournament finale against Western Kentucky Saturday night.
Through four weeks of the season, Tulane is back to where it left off last season as one of the top attacking and defensive threats in the country in key areas, ranking highly in a host of categories before American Athletic Conference play begins in earnest next weekend.
With 546 kills so far this season the Green Wave rank third in the country in putting attacks away, while sitting fifth in assists with 505. At the net, Tulane's 96.5 blocks are 16th nationally, while holding opponents to a hitting percentage of .154 is 14th.
Lexie Douglas leads Tulane with 117 kills and is averaging 2.85 kills per set, leading the team in double-doubles with five.
Kayla Dinkins is hitting .295 on the season and is second in kills with 87, is currently ninth in the country in blocks with 50 on the season. Dinkins, who was named to last weekend's all-tournament team along with Yvette Burcescu, had seven blocks against Bowling Green and is averaging 1.32 blocks per set.
Amanda Giardina leads the setters with 204 assists, while Jenna Ibieta has 165 to help power the Tulane attack.
After setting the all-time digs record at Tulane last weekend, Kaylie McHugh is now less than 400 digs away from the league's all-time mark which was set a few years back. McHugh has 2,001 digs for her career, not only being the first Tulane player to reach the 2,000-digs mark but becoming just the third player in the history of the American Athletic Conference to reach that number.
Dating back to the time when the two sides were rivals in Conference USA, Tulane and Southern Miss meet on the court for the first time since the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic opener in 2017. The Green Wave are 49-10 against the Golden Eagles all-time in program history.
Southern Miss has had a tough start to the season, sitting at 0-10 on the year with each of their last nine losses coming via sweeps. Southern Miss will also face LSU this week, taking on the Tigers a day before Tulane does.
