Johnson Defends 400 IM Title at the American Athletic Championships
Feb 21, 2020 | Women's Swimming and Diving
HOUSTON – Senior Olivia Johnson captured her third career gold medal in the American Athletic Conference Championships on Friday, as she posted a winning time of 4:07.72 in the 400 yard IM to highlight day three competition for the Tulane University swimming and diving team.
Johnson's winning time of 4:07.72 smashed her own school record, which she set in the preliminary round earlier in the day. The West Lafayette, Indiana, native left no doubt in defending her 2019 title, as she won the event by an incredible nine seconds.
Johnson's time also served as an NCAA B-cut standard and was less than three seconds shy of the meet record set back in 2014.
Johnson was not the only Green Wave competitor to post a strong performance in the 400 IM. Fellow senior Jordan Morling, who took runner-up honors in 2019, made a return visit to the medal stand, as she placed third in a time of 4:18.31.
Green Wave freshmen Mya Drost-Parra and Kate Amar also weren't far behind, as they finished fourth (4:18.99) and seventh (4:21.77), respectively.
With its first, third, fourth and seventh place finishes in the 400 IM, Tulane scored 63 points in the 400 IM alone. Tulane's strong showing in the 400 IM helped the Green Wave move up the leaderboard into fourth place with 310 points.
Junior Kate McDonald continued her strong AAC Championships week, as she made her second trip to the medal stand, finishing runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke thanks to a time of 1:00.34.
McDonald's time in the 100-yard backstroke was less than half a second shy of a Tulane school record, but the performance did serve as a personal best and a NCAA B-cut standard.
Fellow junior Courtney Barker fell less than half a second shy of making a trip to the medal stand in the 100-yard backstroke, as she took fifth place with a time of 54.30, which also served as a personal best.
In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Iza Pelka highlighted Green Wave individuals thanks to a time of 1:50.47.
