Loyd and Hughes Lead Green Wave to Close AAC Championship
Feb 29, 2020 | Track & Field
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Junior Kyah Loyd and senior Brandi Hughes led the way for the Tulane indoor track and field team on day two of the American Athletic Conference Championship, earning second- and third-place respective finishes in the 60-meter hurdles.
Loyd became the new program record holder on Saturday, notching a time of 8.33 seconds for a new personal best. Hughes crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 8.36 seconds to solidify a top-three spot.
"Our team has been led all season long by Trina [Malej], Nastja [Modic], our hurdlers and the 4x400 relay team. That's the group of athletes that led us here, and all of those people really came through for us and performed at a high level and I'm excited about that," head coach Eric Peterson said. "We have some holes on our team that we need to work really hard to fill in the future so that when we come back to this championship, we come with heavier artillery than what we have right now. But, I'm certainly proud of the way this group performed, and represents our program and Tulane. We know where we need to get better and we're going to continue working hard in doing that."
Also placing on Saturday was the 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Loyd, senior Maya Harewood, sophomore Louise Jones and sophomore Hunter Robinson. The squad finished third overall with a new career-best time of 3:42.43, moving up to take seventh overall spot in school history.
Sophomore Trina Malej was just outside of a top-three scoring position in the triple jump, finishing fourth overall with a 12.68 meter mark on her second attempt. Junior Jordyn Lesh reached a distance of 10.36 meters, finishing 19th.
Tying for ninth in the high jump to start day two was sophomore Olivia Hicks, who finished with a height of 1.62 meters.
Senior Mary Catherine Stovall finished the 3,000 meter with a time of 10:37.92 to finish 41st overall, while junior Bridgid Selfors recorded a time of 10:47.93 to finish 47th.
Tulane totaled 37 points in the meet, beating Tulsa and USF to finish 10th. Houston's women's team was crowned the AAC Champion, while Cincinnati finished second and Temple finished third.
As Tulane's indoor season comes to an end, the team readies for the start of the outdoor season in just two weeks. The Green Wave open action back in Birmingham, Alabama, in the Southern Invitational on March 13 and 14.
