Men's Tennis Drops Road Tilt at No. 8 TCU, 5-2
Mar 8, 2020 | Men's Tennis
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Tulane men's tennis team suffered its second straight defeat against a top-10 opponent in a 5-2 setback at eighth-ranked TCU on Sunday afternoon.
Ranked No. 43 nationally, the Green Wave (5-6) fell behind early when the Horned Frogs (11-4) closed out a 6-2 doubles win on court two, before finishing off a 6-3 victory on court one to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
TCU kept the pressure on early in singles, earning a pair of straight-set victories on courts five and six, respectively, to push Tulane to the brink and extend its lead to 3-0.
The Green Wave punched back however, as junior and 50th-ranked Hamish Stewart bounced back from a lost first set to win the next two, 6-2 and 6-2, against No. 105 Tadeas Paroulek to put his team on the scoreboard.
The Frogs would clinch shortly thereafter with a three-set win on court three.
Playing No. 4 in the lineup, senior Tim Ruetzel earned a 7-6 first set against No. 119 Jacob Fearnley, and despite falling behind, 5-4, in the second frame, Fearnley was forced to retire. Ruetzel's win was his first over a ranked opponent this season, giving the Wave their second and final point of the day.
Tulane returns to the courts next Friday, March 13 for a home match against No. 40 Minnesota. First serve is set for 1 p.m., at the City Park Tennis Center.
