SENIOR DAY: Tulane Honors Track and Field's Brandi Hughes
Apr 3, 2020 | Track & Field
EDITOR'S NOTE: Over the next few months, TulaneGreenWave.com will honor the 35 seniors that had their respective collegiate careers cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic through this SENIOR DAY series. We hope you the fans enjoy this series and remember the seniors from the 2020 graduating class.
Brandi Hughes came to New Orleans from Anaheim Hills, California in the fall of 2016 and made an immediate impact on the Green Wave roster. Hughes broke the freshman and sophomore records in the 60-meter hurdles during her first two seasons Uptown, ultimately going on to place eight times in indoor and outdoor American Athletic Conference Championships during her four-year tenure. A notable first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles in 2017 put Hughes at the top of the record books, with the then best time in program history at 8.34 seconds. Hughes now holds five program records, standing second in the 60-meter hurdles and 100-meter hurdles, sixth in the 400-meter hurdles and first among freshmen and sophomore times in the 60-meter hurdles.
Today, we honor Hughes in our SENIOR DAY web series.
Q AND A WITH BRANDI HUGHES
What made you want to come to Tulane?
"I decided to come to Tulane because, not only did it afford me the opportunity to compete with the best athletes at a Division I level, but it also provided me with the opportunity to receive a top-tier education. My dream school was one that challenged me academically and athletically, and Tulane fit that criteria perfectly. Choosing Tulane was a no brainer."
What is your favorite memory from your time at Tulane?
"My favorite memory from my time at Tulane would be the bus rides home after a meet. My team is so fun-spirited and supportive, and we’d always celebrate and uplift each other after a meet. There were times where we’d all do sing-a-longs, other times we’d have dance battles, or we’d just watch previous races and reminisce together. My team was a family and I’m forever grateful for them and all the memories we created."
What's next?
"My plans for next year are to return to Tulane University, complete my master's degree, and compete in next year’s outdoor season. Due to a redshirt outdoor season, I have eligibility to compete with my team for another year. I’m excited to come back and represent the Green Wave with my team again!"
