ROME, Italy – Tulane University men's tennis 2016 alumnus Dominik Koepfer continues to build on his resume on the ATP Tour after scoring a pair of huge upsets in the first two rounds of the 2020 ATP Masters 1000 Rome.
Ranked No. 97 in the current ATP world rankings, Koepfer defeated the world's No. 27 player, Alex de Minaur, in comeback fashion, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), before earning the biggest victory of his young career by ousting world No. 9 Gael Monfils in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, in Thursday's second round.
Koepfer's ATP points accumulation currently project him to crack the top 50 in the next release of the ATP rankings.
Up next, Koepfer will face 18-year-old Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16 with the winner looking at a potential matchup against 17-time Grand Slam champion and current world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.
Following a breakthrough 2019 season that saw Koepfer break into the top 100 of the world rankings, reach the third round of the U.S. Open, the second round at Wimbledon and earn a spot on Germany's Davis Cup roster, Koepfer's 2020 experience on Tour included appearances in the Australian Open and U.S. Open.
