Men's Tennis Shuts Out UTSA, 4-0
Jan 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's tennis team picked up its third win in two days by defeating UTSA, 4-0, on Friday afternoon at the City Park Tennis Center.
After rain passed through the region earlier in the day and delayed the start of the match by three hours, the Green Wave (3-0) finally got on the courts for doubles around at 4 p.m. The senior duo of Hamish Stewart and Ewan Moore cruised on court one with a 6-2 win, but the Roadrunners (1-1) closed out court three, 6-4, to leave the first team point of the match hanging in the balance on court two.
Akos Kotorman and Billy Suarez exchanged games with UTSA most of the way with the difference coming when the Wave broke serve to take a 3-1 lead. The Roadrunners were unable to counter, as Suarez served out the final game to clinch the doubles point and a 6-4 victory.
Tulane kept the pressure on in singles, winning the first set on all six courts. Ranked 40th nationally, Stewart was first to finish on court one, 6-2, 6-1, before Fynn Kuenkler earned a 6-4, 6-1 decision on court five.
Freshman Rafael de Alba cruised to a 6-0 first-set victory on court six, but fell behind, 4-1, in the second frame. The Monterrey, Mexico native rallied to win the next five games to take a 5-4 advantage. He split the next two games before closing it out, 7-5, to clinch the match with the Green Wave's fourth point.
Up next, Tulane sets out for a pair of road matches against Southeastern Conference opponents next weekend. The Green Wave play at Alabama on Friday, January 29 at 1 p.m., before heading to Mississippi State for a noon matchup on Jan. 31.
